Why Should Your Child Settle For Anything Less Than Organic Baby Food?

Author: Virginia Louise

Organic baby food is something that has been rising and rising in popularity all throughout the recent years.

General reports in the press seem to add weight to this argument in that many questions are being raised about the contents and additives being added to our food nowadays.

Why are people so keen to try out organic food?

The whole concept of eating organically is nothing new in fact.

If you venture back 50 years or so before the popularity of chemicals then every product was organic by default.

Simply put anything that is non-organic is something that has had artificial chemicals added to it to increase productivity.

The rise in popularity of pesticides is something that has happened fairly recently in history.

The cynical amongst us say that in order to make production profitable and to keep efficient enough to meet the increasing demands and pressures place on producers by supermarkets and their shareholders, pesticides and chemicals have become a must have.

This is in despite of questions being increasingly raised on the effect on the general health of the ultimate consumer.

When you transfer this thinking to babies and their delicate systems you can see why many parents are taking time to investigate the organic baby food ranges that their local supermarket has to offer.

But it is not just food that has been recognised as a potential negative on baby's health it is also the clothes they wear and the products used to make the things that surround them.

Think about what chemicals are being added to shampoos, clothes and linen these are the more hidden areas that can be easy to overlook and be just as harmful particularly for a baby.

All of this sounds horrific and it is but it is something that the ordinary consumer can do a lot about - the so called voting by your feet method.

Avoiding products with questionable origins and constituents is easy with a little education and organic baby food is a good place to start.

You Know You're A Green Stay At Home Mom When . . .

Life as an eco friendly mom takes some extra effort. Doing so as a stay at home mom has some advantages, but that still doesn’t make it all that easy.

You know you’re a green stay at home mom when…

You can’t understand why anyone wouldn’t use cloth diapers on a baby. With the right ones, it’s really not that different from disposable diapers, and much less waste. Then there’s the chance you can potty train your child younger than average… freedom!

You enjoy making baby food for your little one.

Your children help you in your organic garden. Most likely you’d love to have more room for it.

If there’s any way to have free range chickens in your backyard, you’ve got them.

Making homemade bread is one of your pleasures. The time spent is well worth the effort both for the taste and the savings.

You can think of plenty of uses for empty jars.

You know how much money you’re saving by choosing eco friendly options and how much waste you’re preventing.

You walk to run errands or take the kids to school whenever possible. Possible includes wet and cold weather, so long as it’s safe to walk where you’re going. Other parents may comment on your fortitude or insanity.

You wonder if your family really needs two cars. You may have even gotten rid of the second car because you know you can live without it. There’s public transportation for those times you need to get somewhere you can’t walk to and your husband needs the one car.

You breastfeed your toddler as long as you both enjoy it.

You don’t let caring for your children keep you from caring for the world around you. You do your best to teach your kids why they should care about the environment too.

The clerks know you at the local thrift store, and you know how to find the best clothes for your kids and yourself there. Who needs new?

Most times you take your kids with you to the farmer’s market, so that they can learn about food. But it’s a nice break sometimes to go on your own for a little peace and quiet. Hopefully you won’t start looking frantically for the “missing” child you left home with daddy.

You know what the best eco friendly toys are, and your kids love them. Most of their non eco friendly toys are handed down or were bought used.

Your children know little to nothing about fast food restaurants, and especially little about toys that come with meals.

You make many of your own cleaning supplies, and check the ingredients of any you buy. Everything you clean with is so safe you can let your kids use it.

Massachusetts Bans BPA In Baby Bottles, Sippy Cups

noho bpa protest
BOSTON (AP) - Massachusetts is banning the use of a potentially dangerous chemical in baby bottles and sippy cups, but activists say the move doesn't go far enough.

The Public Health Council approved the new regulations on Wednesday barring the production or sale of reusable food and beverage containers for toddlers and infants that contain bisphenol A or BPA.

The Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow says the limited ban leaves infants and toddlers vulnerable to exposure to BPA in infant formula and baby food packaging.

The council said studies have warned about the potential health effects of BPA, especially for infants, nursing and formula-fed children and developing fetuses.

Massachusetts is the eighth state to impose a BPA ban. Gov. Deval Patrick had pushed for the measure.
