Can the Food Pyramid Go Meat Free? | TakePart - Inspiration to Action

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is likely to take another crack at rebuilding the food pyramid in 2011, and meatless eaters may finally be vindicated—if the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) gets its way.

The nonprofit group of doctors and advocates filed suit recently after the USDA ignored its request for a meat-free food pyramid, reports Slashfood. PCRM has suggested a new design entirely, which is a plate rather than a pyramid. The Power Plate, designed by PCRM, calls for equal amounts of fruits, legumes, grains and veggies.

"There is no need for animal-derived products in the diet, and you're better off without them," PCRM's site declares. "Be sure to include a reliable source of vitamin B12, such as any common multiple vitamin or fortified foods."

As far as propositions go, PCRM's is a bold one. But it is not completely absurd, unlike the idea that our planet can sustain our carnivorous appetites indefinitely.
